Defence Background

The cordial relations and good cooperation between the Indian and Kenyan Government and particularly the military interaction was a clear justification for the establishment of a contact person and office in New Delhi. This led to the establishment of the Office of the Defence Adviser/Attaché in 1980 at Kenya High Commission, New Delhi India which is also accredited to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Singapore.

Since then the area of cooperation in terms of Training and Joint Exercises between the two militaries has increased many folds. Many of the Kenyan military Commanders including retired ones have come for various courses in India which dates back to the early years of Kenya’s Independence. Over the years the Kenya military have made a tremendous progress in terms of establishment of Training Institutions in Kenya.

Currently there are two Military Training Academies in Kenya which are offering courses slot (bids) to foreign military personnel and is running a course every calender year. They are Kenya National Defence College (NDC) and Kenya Defence Staff College (DSC). To date Kenya military officers are offered and do come for various courses to India and the countries of accreditation. There are senior officers from these countries who attend courses in Kenya Military Academies as well.

Joint exercises have been maintained and continue between India and Kenya Military. This cooperation has been extended to the point of the military personnel being involved in civil projects in the areas of health and education especially in Kenya.
